Beschreibung
One of the major challenges of the 21st century is the need for sustainable energy conversion and energy storage devices. Therefore, we need not only to identify novel materials for energy storage but also find new, low-energy consuming ways to produce them. The use of biological templates represents an elegant way to prepare highly anisotropic cathode materials for Li ion batteries. Such cathode materials are amorphous in nature and thus different from their crystalline counterparts. For crystalline (Li)FePO4, a classic two-phase material, the crystallinity grants an almost constant potential during charge/discharge but also restricts Li ion diffusion to 1 dimensional (1D) channels that are easily blocked by defects. For amorphous (Li)FePO4 the situation might be very different and the Li ion conductivity is anticipated to be much higher as the ionic transport is no longer restrained to 1D channels.
