In particular biocatalysis is environmentally friendly and produces no dangerous waste. In addition, biocatalytic processes are due to the mild reaction conditions less cost intensive than normal chemical procedures. With respect to industrial application biocatalysis is part of industrial biotechnology, now called white biotechnology. According to studies of consultant agencies an increase in the volume of processes of white biotechnology is considered to be 10 % per year.
