Radar Coverage Optimization for CEATS

In the framework of CEATS (Central European Air Traffic Services) which will provide a centralized airtraffic control for the upper airspace of 8 European countries (Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, (northern parts of) Italy, Slovak Republic and Slovenia) an evaluation of the existing en-route radars was necessary together with the determination of the coverage provided by them. The aim was an optimization both in position and number of the radars to provide the best-possible surveillance while minimizing the costs by shuting down excessive radars. Furthermore the simulation identified areas where at the moment the coverage is insufficient and additional sensors are necessary.
