Abstract

A Stark field assembly is described allowing a precise determination of high and very homogeneous electric fields. The Stark field arrangement is formed as a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Measuring the free spectral range by means of a CW dye laser and a lambdameter, the field strength can be calculated with a relative error of 2*10-3. The method can be used generally for determination of the free spectral range and the spacing of Fabry-Perot interferometers with high finesse. Fields of up to 13 kV mm-1 were obtained with this assembly. Replacing the optical field plates by plates made of steel, fields higher than 50 kV mm-1 can be generated. In this case, a calibration based on the measurements with the optical plates is possible. In a first application high-field Stark effects of the sodium D lines were investigated.
