Abstract

Pneumatic conveying is a favorable transport technique for particulate materials. Hereby the solid material is transported by means of a transport gas through the pipe system. Knowledge about flow parameters is important for the optimization of the conveying process, e.g. with respect to the energy consumption. However, the nature of the transport process forms a challenging environment for flow measurements. Flow meters based on electrical sensing effects are of particular interest because of their non-invasive nature. In this work we present a study for electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) for the continuous determination of the mass flow rate in horizontal pneumatic conveying processes. We address the required signal processing steps for the determination of the mass flow rate
systematically, which are the determination of the material distribution within transport process, the measurement of the velocity, as well as the determination of the mass concentration from electrical measurements. For a metrological assessment of ECT based mass flow metering, experiments on a laboratory test rig are carried out where a balance is used for reference. Hereby, a good fit between the ECT estimates and the balance data is demonstrated for the mass flow rate, as well as for the accumulated mass over the duration of the experiments.
