Abstract

Intermittent electricity from renewable energy sources can be used to produce hydrogen, which can be stored easily and permanently. The hydrogen combustion engine is therefore an ideal solution for implementing CO2-neutral drive concepts. Hydrogen also offers the advantage of short refueling times for the vehicle operator. The Graz University of Technology and AVL are currently developing a hydrogen combustion engine for commercial vehicles that is suitable for series production and offers a sufficiently high power density to be used in some of the trucks in Europe.
