Abstract

The high specific stiffness and strength as well as the poor wear resistance of the titanium alloys can be improved by ceramic reinforcements. The particulate reinforced titanium alloys (PRTi) can be forged, formed and machined. The processing maps have been used as a tool to identify the optimal forging parameters by evaluating the flow data according to the dynamic mechanical model proposed by Prasad et. al. The processing maps are correlated to metallographic observations of the deformation mechanisms. But due to the non-uniform deformation of the compression sample, the microstructure within the deformed sample varies locally with the local condition of deformation, which is different from the global parameters. This work correlates the local deformation state with local processing maps and local metallographic observations on Ti64 and Ti662 reinforced with TiB in-situ particles and TiC added particles, respectively. The flow data are used as input for a FEM software to simulate the non-uniform deformation of a cylindrical compression sample to obtain the local deformation state at the local parameters of strain rate and temperature. The local microstructure is correlated with the generated local processing maps according to Prasad et al, the strain hardening rate, and with the model proposed by Rao and Murty.
