Abstract
With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), there will be
an explosion in the number of connected embedded systems.
These systems will be present in every kind of environment,
and even the simplest and smallest objects will execute
software while interacting with others. This development
will also lead to an increased demand for new computing
platforms with hard guarantees on safety, security, real-time,
maintainability, and compositionality.
An underestimated challenge is the need for running software
from different suppliers on the same device, and to also
integrate/update/remove new or existing modules at runtime in
order to achieve a long lifetime of the device. These changes
also have to be performed dependably, and will lead to a
massive number of coexisting software variants, reflecting
different user requirements, changing legislations, service
features, locations, etc.
Therefore, MCSmartOS offers a highly flexible design
approach, enabling suppliers to develop software modules
independently, and to dynamically compose them into existing
systems with one or more processor cores. Apart, it aims on
minimal porting effort to support the expected big diversity of
hardware architectures.
