Abstract

Here we extend dispersion engineering in metasurfaces to time-domain applications and demonstrate nanocoatings that temporally reshape ultrashort laser pulses. The only 600 nm thin devices provide previously unavailable transmissive anomalous group delay dispersion in the visible to near-infrared spectral region and compensate for the dispersion of up to 2 mm thick fused silica. We show how they can straightforwardly compress light pulses down to the few-cycle limit or be coated onto most conventional optics to allow their direct application in ultrafast lasers. Combining this capability with nanoscopic spatial control opens pathways to create space- and time-varying beams.
