Outdoor sound propagation simulations using the Discontinuous Galerkin method: Preliminary results

Publikation: Beitrag in Buch/Bericht/KonferenzbandBeitrag in einem Konferenzband

Abstract

Simulation of noise propagation outdoors is commonly performed using geometry-based methods.
However, as these methods often do not adequately model wave effects (e.g., diffraction), they yield
invalid results especially in the low-frequency regime. In this contribution, the Discontinuous
Galerkin method – a wave-based method – is used to simulate acoustic wave propagation in time
domain in a large real-world geometry. The Discontinuous Galerkin method allows for
computations employing high-order ansatz functions both in time and space. Due to the matrix-free
approach, the algorithm can be highly parallelized. The acoustic source term implementation allows
for moving sources with arbitrary waveforms, such that traffic noise propagation can be efficiently
modeled. In this contribution, preliminary results of Discontinuous Galerkin simulations in a
geometrically complex outdoor scenario will be presented, highlighting the capabilities of the
method.
