Abstract

During the manufacturing of cellulose materials chemical modifications occurre, which causes the changes of fibres properties and gives possibility for oxidative and/or hydrolytic degradation of cellulose. These reactions include all functional groups and glucose bonds of cellulose leading to formation of new functional groups as well as cleavage and shortening of celluloses chains. In this work the cotton fibres were oxidized in different ways in order to obtain different content of accessible carboxyl groups and different structural changes of fibres were initiated. In order to achieve better understanding of these modifications, the content of accessible fibres functional groups determined by complexometric titration were correlated with degree of polymerisation determined viscosimetrically. The precise information about products and reaction mechanisms among oxidation procedure can be gained only with combination of both methods (complexometric titration for determination of -COOH groups and viscosimetric determination of degree of polymerisation).
