Abstract
In order to make SOFCs CHP units a promising alternative to ICEs, the impact of biogas cleaning and pre-processing on the system complexity and costs must be reasonable. While cleaning is strongly needed, biogas pre-reforming might be avoided. To this end, this paper investigates the behavior of commercial planar anode-supported NiYSZ/YSZ/LSCF cell, operated at 800°C and fed with a simulated biogas (CH4 55%, CO2 35%, N2 10% on a dry volume basis), aiming at demonstrating the operability of the current SOFC technology in small-scale biogas plants. A detailed Impedance analysis and SOFC material characterization by SEM and EDX reveal a slight performance degradation after 120 hours exposure to simulated clean biogas.
