Abstract
The Indian Energy sector is in between a major transition from coal intensive power generation to large-scale renewable energy. This transition has impacts not only on the country‘s economic growth, but also on the global scenario. After the Climate Change Conference (COP 21, Paris (2015), India has set ambitious targets for a cumulative installed capacity of 175 GW of onshore wind and solar PV by the year 2025. The integration process involving such a high penetration of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources like wind and solar PV requires a lot of immediate attention, as the complexity of the interplay between the components in the energy system drastically increases given the fluctuating nature of VRE sources. The fluctuating nature of the VRE sources also brings inthe so called ‚Integration‘ costs, which make the overall energy transition process highly expensive.
