Description
The rise and proliferation of Open Science are key impacts of digitalization on scientific research. However, the practices surrounding Open Science, the processes driving it and the platforms facilitating it have been largely structured by quantitative research and qualitative data. Considering the repertoires of research that have shaped the manifestation of Open Science to date (biomedical research being a leader), it is no wonder that qualitative researchers often feel that Open Science is not relevant to their work, apart from the possibility of Open Access publishing. Institutional and funder mandates that are not consistent with the cultures and norms of qualitative research cause tension and conflicts, platforms and tools that are not designed to facilitate the opening of qualitative research foster exclusion, biases about qualitative research limit support for making it open, and a widespread culture of openness within qualitative research does not yet exist. This presentation takes a sociological approach to tease out and dive deeper into the challenges to open qualitative research and sets the stage for an afternoon workshop that will focus on overcoming these challenges using cutting-edge tools and practices designed by and for qualitative researchers.Period | 13 Jun 2023 |
