In this study, we explore the impact of magnetic nanoparticles on a biocomposite composed ofenzymes encapsulated within a hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (namely, BioHOF1).
Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks have shown interesting properties which can be
exploited in biocatalysis. These self-assembling materials can grow around enzymes,
effectively encapsulating them. In the biocomposite, enzymes are shielded, potentially enabling
their recycling and operation within a broader pH and temperature range1,2. The biocatalyst is synthesized through a one-pot method in water. Our investigations reveal a notable enhancement in the activity of the biocatalyst upon the inclusion of magnetic nanoparticles.
We specifically examined catalase (CAT) and glucose oxidase (GOx) enzymes, both of which
exhibited a significant increase in effectiveness factor when encapsulated in presence of iron
oxide nanoparticles. Remarkably, the encapsulated enzymes displayed retained activity even
when stored at room temperature, showing a favorable affinity for the BioHOF1.
An innovative aspect of our work involves the use of magnetic nanoparticles, conferring
dynamic localization properties to the biocatalysts. We were able to easily collect the powder
using a magnet with a minimal loss of product. This feature contributes to improved
recoverability, recyclability, and precise localization control for highly specific reactions.
