Description

Part of Session 6 - Avatars and virtual reality in the courtroom

Online court hearings are becoming increasingly important.
The advantages: Trials can be conducted quickly, and the parties involved often do not have to travel hundreds of kilometers.
But videoconferencing has its limitations, especially when you are talking to a group of people: It is tiring and unnatural to stare at the screen and be stared at throughout the conversation.
With our Virtual Court System, we are developing software that will expand the use of video technology in the civil justice system.
Participants in the trial communicate in virtual space using avatars - 3-D graphical representations of real people.
In this talk, we provide an overview of the system's development progress and its current status, emphasizing its potential to transform legal proceedings.
Additionally, novel research opportunities afforded by this innovative platform are highlighted.
However, also concerns about potential misuse and dangers associated with the technology are address.
Finally, future plans for the continuing development and improvement of the Virtual Court System are outlined.
