Tutorial Nr. 1 - New Developments in Grounding Design including Risk Analysis

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk at workshop, seminar or courseScience to science

Description

In this tutorial, the essential aspects for the dimensioning and assessment of earthing systems, especially for distribution networks (medium and low voltage networks), will be covered. First, the assessments according to international standards such as EN 50522 and IEEE Std. 80 will be compared with the newer assessment approach based on Quantified Risk Analysis (QRA). Furthermore, the most important parameters for safety assessment, such as fault duration, fault probability, magnitude of fault current, earthing resistance and transferred voltages are addressed and discussed, including case studies. Part 1: Basic aspects of safety earthing, Standards, QRA (Th. Connor) Part 2: System Design & Data (L. Fickert) Part 3: Soil resistivity measurement and analysis (B. Jauk) Part 4: Earthing system verification by measurement (K. Friedl) The determination of reduction factors and the role and proof of a global grounding system are discussed.
