The institute represents education and research in fluid mechanics and heat transfer in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering/Economics. Courses provide knowledge in theoretical methods and technical applications. Further insight is provided into numerical and analytical methods in fluid mechanics and heat transfer and in gas dynamics, and in flow measuring techniques. The fields of research of the institute are flow measuring techniques, multiphase flows, aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics and modelling, and heat and mass transfer. Work is performed on the propagation of pressure waves, the computation of turbulent flows with chemical reactions, the aerodynamics of ski-jumping, heat transfer with phase transition, and the collision of liquid drops. Direct cooperations with industries are strongly emphasised. The institute is equipped with two low-speed wind tunnels, (optical) flow measuring techniques, a parallel computer, and various laboratory equipment.
