The Institute of Structural Analysis at Graz University of Technology was founded in 1912 and was just recently celebrating its 100th anniversary. Structural analysis plays a major role in the education and practice of civil engineers - no matter whether constructions are built in wood, concrete or steel. The courses of the institute cover the whole span from conventional calculations to computer-based simulation methods such as the Finite Element Method.
Research at the institute has its focus on simulations in fluid and structure mechanics. In most applications, interfaces play an important role such as those occurring in crack simulations, multi-field problems (e.g. two-phase flows), and multi-physics problems (e.g. fluid-structure-interaction). They require innovative and advanced numerical methods for the simulation.
