Organisation profile

Profile Information

The PCCL combines scientific and industrial strengths in the field of polymer engineering and science. An important aspect of all research activities of the PCCL is a strong orientation on the performance and functionality of polymer products in service. As with other materials, final product performance and functionality not only depend on the nature and type of the polymeric material used, but also on many other factors related to product design, processing and the like. The PCCL performs application-related pre-competitive research in the following 3 areas: 1: Performance-Defined Structural Polymeric Materials (STRUCPOL) 2: Functional Polymeric Materials and Polymer Surfaces (FUNPOL) 3: Development of Components, Molds and Dies (DECMOLD) In addition, the PCCL performs strategic research on a more fundamental level that will amount to about 12 to 15% of the PCCL’s project activities in the first four years. For example, the growing impact of high-quality polymer products is best illustrated by developments in the transportation and aerospace industry, and in the electronics and information technology sector. Due to their wide variability in properties and their low density, plastics and polymer composites are increasingly being used in both non-structural and structural applications in automotive vehicles and airplanes, frequently replacing other materials such as metals, glass and ceramics. The PCCL is located in Leoben with branches in Graz and Wels. Keywords: Applied polymer science; development of molds and dies; functional polymeric materials; performance defined structural polymeric materials; polymer surfaces Co-operating partners: AGRU Kunststofftechnik GmbH (Austria) Airbus Deutschland GmbH (Germany) APE advanced polymer engineering GmbH (Austria) AT & S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG (Austria) Balzers GmbH (Austria) Battenfeld Kunststoffmaschinen GmbH (Austria) BMW AG (Germany) BÖHLER Edelstahl GmbH & Co.
