Geoinformation (also called Geographic Information) results from Geodata, i.e. data that are spatially referenced. Geodata are being structured and stored in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), enabling applications that are built on the knowledge on spatial relationships. Within the domain of Geodesy, Surveying and Geoinformation, this Institute can be located at the crossroads where data from different data capturing and measuring technologies meet, in order to be consistently structured, semantically attributed and stored in databases so they can be used and analyzed in a great variety of applications. The Institute focusses - apart from teaching in the Baccalaureate Curriculum "Geomatics Engineering" and in the Master Curriculum "Geomatics Science" (see www.geo-it.tugraz.at) - on research in the domains of Geoinformation modelling, of implementating Geodata in Geodatabases, of embedding GIS and CAD in the general IT domain, of standardization and interoperability of Geodata and Geo-services. A special research area are Location Based Services (LBS) which deal with applications based on information in spatial and temporal contexts on mobile devices. Short Description: The Institute is one of several Institutes of the TU Graz domain of Surveying and Geoinformation. Besides teaching, emphasis is being put on the modelling of Geodata, their implementation in Geodatabases, standardization and interoperability of Geodata, the embedding of GIS and CAD in general information technology, and Location Based Services (see www.geoinformation.tugraz.at)
