Research interests

Architect, educator, and writer Andreas Lechner produces contextually sensitive, research-driven designs. Andreas holds both a PhD and Master of Architecture from TU Graz. Prior to founding Studio Andreas Lechner, he studied and worked with Pritzker Prize–winning architects Thom Mayne and Shigeru Ban, drawing on formative experiences in Los Angeles, Berlin, Vienna, and Tokyo. He currently serves as a tenured associate professor at TU Graz’s Faculty of Architecture.

An accomplished author, Andreas wrote the award-winning ‘Thinking Design: Blueprint for an Architecture of Typology’ (2021) based on his habilitation. He has also held visiting postdoctoral research positions at the Università Iuav di Venezia and the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. Beyond his studio, he lectures and teaches internationally, serves as a visiting professor at the Politecnico di Milano, and leads the research group Counterintuitive Typologies, supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency. He is co-editor of ‘GAM – Graz Architecture Magazine’ and a forthcoming special issue of ‘The Journal of Architecture’ published by the RIBA.
