Research interests

Wilfried Gappmair studied Communications Engineering and Computer Sciences at Graz University of Technology (TUG), Austria, both finished with honors in 1986 and 1991, respectively. In the sequel, he worked on his Doctoral Thesis and graduated in 1994 with a PhD degree (summa cum laude) in Engineering Sciences. Since 2014, he holds the position of an Associate Professor at the TUG Institute of Communication Networks and Satellite Communications (IKS). Serving as Deputy Head of the IKS since 2014, he was appointed in 2021 to the Dean of Studies for the Master's Programme on Space Sciences and Earth from Space.

Since 1987, Dr. Gappmair participates in numerous national as well as international projects. His research activities focus on communication theory, digital modulation, parameter estimation, synchronization in digital receivers, channel coding, as well as satellite and optical wireless communications. He is author and co-author of about 95 refereed journal and conference papers covering his areas of interest, he contributed articles to several books and holds 5 patents. He is co-recipient of the Best Paper Award for a contribution presented at the 12th IEEE International Symposium on Communication Systems, Networks and Signal Processing (CSNDSP). In 2018 and 2020, he was selected as Exemplary Reviewer by the IEEE Communications Society for significant contributions to the review process of the Transactions on Communications journal. Dr. Gappmair is an IEEE Senior Member, a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and a Member of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association (OVE).
