Description

Methanol as the primary fuel for combustion engines substantially reduces NOx emissions compared to pure diesel engines and reduces smoke and PM emissions almost entirely. To further reduce the carbon footprint of methanol, the synthesis of methanol from renewable hydrogen and recycled carbon dioxide might be the key to carbon neutral marine propulsion. Ammonia can be synthesized from nitrogen and hydrogen in a very efficient manner based on the Haber-Bosch-process. Ammonia can be liquefied at moderate pressures, making it possible to achieve acceptable storage capacity. During the combustion process of ammonia, high formation of nitrogen oxides can be expected. The objective of this project is to assess the performance, emissions and market potential of combustion concepts for marine engine applications that rely entirely on renewable fuels.
