BioImpedanceDigiTwin - Intelligent Digital Twins for Arterial Assessment with Bio-Impedance Signals

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Impedance cardiography (ICG), and the closely related Impedance Plethysmography (IPG), are non-invasive, convenient, and low-cost methods widely used for various diagnoses, including vascular and cardiovascular diseases such as arterial stiffness, stenosis, and thrombosis. In practice, by injecting a low-magnitude electric current into the body segment, the impedance changes corresponding to the blood pulsation into the arteries can be measured, which is synchronized to the electrocardiography signal (ECG). However, a lack of and difficult accessibility of data obstructed the improvement of signal interpretability and parameter estimate accuracy, hence widespread clinical adoption. The invention addresses these limitations with multi-physics simulations of real scenarios based on bioimpedance and ECG measurements with standard multi-channel bioimpedance measurement devices. This allows for the creation of digital twins or virtual patients. An Artificial Intelligence (AI) trained on several virtual patients allows for automatized classification of bio-impedance signals concerning arterial diseases. The signals are, in practice, too challenging to interpret by the naked eye. The cohort of virtual patients overcomes the limitation of an AI learning from scarce data.
