EU - ENOUGH - European food chain supply to reduce GHG emissions by 2050

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Food systems are globally responsible for around 21-37% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The food chain (post farm gate) has a number of challenges to combat global warming and to adapt to climate change effects. The focus of the ENOUGH project is to contribute to the EU Farm to Fork Strategy by identifying how the food industry can: 1. Reduce GHG-emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels. 2. Achieve climate neutrality for food businesses by reducing energy use and increasing energy efficiency by 2030. 3. Improve the overall integrated sustainability of food systems (including social/health, climate/environmental and economic aspects) whilst at the same time meeting societal goals. 4. Increase awareness among policy makers, businesses, investors, entrepreneurs, institutions, stakeholders and citizens of selected innovative systemic solutions and their potential for uptake at EU scale. The ENOUGH project brings together 29 partners from 10 EU nations as well as from Norway and the UK who have in depth expertise across the whole food chain (refrigeration, cooking, baking, drying). During the project, the ENOUGH team will generate new information on emissions from the food chain, develop strategic road maps (technical, political and financial), develop digital tools and smart data analysis methods to quantify and benchmark energy use and emissions in the food chain and will demonstrate technologies that are at the TRL5-7 level.
