FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) in Electrical Power Systems

Project: Research area

Project Details

Description

FACTS-elements (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) can be used in electrical power systems to control load flow and to improve voltage stability and power quality. Goal of the project is to develop simulation models for steady state and transient behaviour and the implementation of these models in existing network analysis programs. An important subset of facts are the dynamic reactive power compensation units. These devices can be used to control voltage and reduce flicker caused by fluctuating loads. The classical shunt compensator is the thyristor controlled static var compensator (SVC). A new device, based on IGBT-technology has been developed in recent years. The combination of these different compensation technologies in order to achieve optimal dynamic behaviour and flicker reduction is investigated.
