Cancer is the number two cause of death in Austria. Properties of a specific cancer is determined by its genetic alterations. Next generation sequencing technologies allow to globally identify mutations in all genes of the tumour cells. The project "Molecular genetic therapy selection" combines the identified mutations with the mode of action of established cancer drugs. This facilitates the selection of a personalised theraphy which is targeted at the specific tumour of a patient. The translation of results of basic research into clinical routine with the application of next generation sequencing technologies will allow to improve the qualtity of treatment of Styrian cancer patients.
