    Description

The field of application of the weather radar is changing. Meteorological applications are by far not the only range of use, hydrological applications are gaining in importance. The metering precision has to be increased in order to use the weather radar in the hydrological field. This is one fundamental aim of the WIIS-III Radar / Flood Water project. Within the project the knowledge concerning determination of the water quantity out of weather radar data is to be improved. Methods to calibrate radar data with rain gauge data become essential and establish a basis for a rainfall-runoff model based on gridded weather radar precipitation data. The effort shall lead to the development of an real-time flood warning system, which can be integrated in the existing Weather Image Information System (WIIS). This additional function will further increase the functionality of the WIIS and will make it attractive for other groups of users.
