KRAISBAU - Development of AI tools for a transformation to a circular economy along the life cycle of buildings

The KRAISBAU project has set the goal of systematically advancing the circular economy of the Austrian construction industry. The consortium relies on the principle of "development at display": To this end, we build on the knowledge of newest relevant projects and make it available to the public in aggregated form. Following the integral approach, which is essential for this transformative process, we involve stakeholders and experts from the very beginning, jointly analyse framework conditions and develop recommendations for their adaptation. The process is completed by the comparison, but also proposals for the development of suitable funding and financing instruments. The project is based on the Waste Management Act and the strategic orientation of the Austrian federal government's circular economy strategy. KRAISBAU uses social and technical innovations for an essential contribution to a circular economy. The required profound structural changes along the entire life cycle of >23 real buildings in >5 federal states are supported with the development of 11 Al-based technologies. These include the analysis of existing buildings and documentation in BIM, automated recognition of building characteristics using satellite imagery, circular renovation proposals for decarbonization, the collection and reuse of building elements via interfaces to the specialized trade, automated recognition of interfering materials in construction waste and their allocation for the best possible processing, proposals for preventive maintenance measures, and the automated sustainability assessment of buildings. In addition, the utilization phase of a building shall be supported by creating biological cycles, secondary building products from the construction waste shall be generated, and the application needs of the {specialist) public shall be satisfied by providing information and also active community building. Only when all these coordinated measures are in place will it bepossible to bring about a transformation to the circular economy in the construction industry. KRAISBAU is only the beginning.
