This project will significantly improve the cycle stability, power and energy density of the low-cost and environmentally friendly zinc/air redox flow battery. On the one hand by a pulsed charging current for additive-free alkaline zincate electrolytes and on the other by the development of a novel pH neutral electrolyte consisting of mixtures of aqueous zinc salt solutions and ionic liquids or components of deep eutectic electrolytes. This shall result in dendrite-free zinc deposits at current densities of at least 50 mA/cm² even for low zinc concentrations and significantly improve the energy density as well as the energy efficiency to stimulate the commercial development.
