Description

The transfer processes in multiphase systems play a major role in numerous applications of the automotive industry. Examples are the exhaust gas aftertreatment using SCR-catalysts, diesel catalysts, filters, reformers, and PEM fuel cells. In all cases the reliable control of multiphase processes, like the fluid injection, evaporation and condensation, fluid transport, species mixture in channel flow as well as in flow through a porous media is essential for safety and performance of the devices. In this context various challenges especially for the simulation arise, which are the motivation of this project. An important part of these challenges in design and operation of multiphase systems arises from aerosol flow through channels and especially through porous media. The fluid phase affects the operation of the relevant devices in various ways: 1) Convection and diffusion of the gaseous phase are hindered. 2) The momentum of the gaseous flow induces a flow of the liquid phase. A porous media hinders this convection. 3) In many cases the reaction enthalpies of homogeneous gas reactions or heterogeneous reactions on catalyst surfaces as well as the latent enthalpy of phase change processes are conducted via the porous matrix to a coolant. The goal of this project is the modelling of these transport phenomena. The models shall be implemented in the commercial CFD-code FIRE. Data from the literature of exhaust gas after treatment systems and PEM-fuel cells shall be used for the validation of the model.
