The Mg4AM project aims to develop an industry-applicable, consistent, additive manufacturing process for a sustainable, rare-earth-free magnesium alloy using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). For this purpose, a novel, fire-resistant magnesium alloy tailored to the requirements of additive manufacturing will be developed. Special importance is attached to the qualification of the alloy for the production of fine, flowable powders and the processing on industrially standard L-PBF systems. The capability of the alloy for L-PBF is demonstrated by developing process parameters for an AM system (SLM 280) that is established on the market and finalised with the manufacturing of a gearbox housing specially developed for the use of magnesium. An essential aspect of handling magnesium is safety engineering and therefore a key focus of the present project is the development of an integrated safety concept.
