Description

Through the changes in the structure and operation of power systems, it becomes unavoidable to assess the actual system status in real time and to optimise the use of alternative options as HVDC-systems and phase shifting transformers (PSTs) to obtain a secure power system operation. An important issue for this is to use the available data from phasor measurement units (PMUs) and wide area measurement systems (WAMSs). However, so far research on PMUs and WAMSs has mainly focused on fast interactions, transient stability and disturbance identification, whereas the control of HVDC-links and PSTs was seen as a classic load flow problem. The aim of this dissertation is to build a bridge between control strategies and system state evaluation with WAMS and the classical grid operation optimisation. Therefore, the goal is to develop a WAMS based control and optimisation tool for PSTs and HVDC links, considering optimisation in normal operation as well as corrective measures to ensure voltage stability.
