Description

The all-embracing network of objects, which are able to communicate with each other and exchange all types of information, is commonly referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). Amongst the manifold technological and sociological challenges within this emerging technology, privacy protection is one of the major issues. Within the proposed project PIT we aim at providing a comprehensive set of privacy mechanisms that protects the IoT from threats like tracking and tracing and provides services like anonymous authentication. Our goal is not to invent totally new approaches but to base our algorithms and protocols on already existing solutions from related areas like trusted computing. In addition to a more theoretical investigation (and adaption) of these mechanisms, we will also implement and test the most promising approaches on real IoT-devices. The special focus of this evaluation work lies on low-end devices like passive RFID tags and smart cards because solutions for this class of devices will also work in most cases for all other IoT-device classes. Another major outcome of PIT will be an evaluation platform that allows flexibly assessing the suggested privacy-protection mechanisms for low-end IoT-devices. This evaluation platform will provide device emulators, a use model with hardware and software libraries, and according tool-chain support. It will be used to implement prototypes of IoT-devices for demonstration purposes within the project. Furthermore, these prototypes can also be used as a reference model for future products and applications. During the project we will implement a demonstration application to show the privacy-enhancement mechanisms in a real environment. This allows extensive testing of the privacy features and assessment concerning their usability.
