Within the project longitudinal girders are tested, which were members of an old riveted steel railway bridge. Notches are milled in at the critical girder positions and afterwards fatigue tests were done with measurements of the crack front. Numerical calculations, based on fracture mechanics, are done to verify the crack growth behaviour. With these calculations the remaining fatigue life of similar riveted railway bridges with fatigue cracks could be determined.
