SKISPRUNG - Precise determination of position and velocity along the trajectory in case of ski jumping

    Project: Research project

    Project Details

    Description

The project aims at the determination of position and velocity along the trajectory of a ski jumper. To demonstrate the feasibility of trajectory determination in case of this high kinematic motion, a prototype system is developed during the project. The information on the jumpers state vector along the trajectory enables novel methods for the analysis of the jump and its dynamic characteristics. Being updated at least up to twenty times per second, the state vector consists of the height above terrain and the velocity both given at each epoch. Primarily, using high-resolution cameras, an image-based method of trajectory determination is chosen. For the verification of the systems accuracy, GPS is used. For training jumps, a tiny, high-precision receiver is mounted inside the jumpers helmet. The GPS data processing is performed by relative techniques using phase measurements.
