Space Plasma Physics and Reconnection

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The propagation of ideal MHD waves in half spaces separated by a current sheet is studied. Local dissipation within the current layer generates magnetic reconnection which acts as a source for plasma waves. A mathematical model for the nonlinear decay of the current sheet togehter with the linear wave perturbation is set up and investigated analytically as well as numerically. The results are applied to satellite data from the magnetopause in order to understand the interaction of the solar wind with magnetospheric plasma.
