During the past ten years considerable effort has been invested to improve the drawing speed of complex sceens (e.g. Level of Detail, progressive rendering etc.). These techniques do not solve the problems that appear, when dealing with real large models. At the point where the entire scene can not be held in RAM any longer, rendering the scene no longer turns out to be the bottleneck but instead retrieving the 3D data from a database.
