    Description

This thesis deals with the analysis of success factors within the automotive testing industry. The term “automotive testing” used in this thesis refers to verification and validation during the powertrain development process. The main research question deals with the identification of success factors for effective and efficient test processes. Besides the main topic several other areas are investigated, like standardization within the processes or products and systems used. Generally, the automotive industry is under high “productivity-pressure” because the European and US-markets are almost saturated and the car manufacturers need to extend their product ranges to hold/increase their market shares. But developing more product variants lead to more complex development processes. Therefore, the car manufacturers need to increase the efficiency of their product development processes (reducing costs and shorten time-to-market). Finding success factors for the test processes makes a substantial economic potential available for improving the overall product development process as the costs of the test process take a substantial portion of the total costs of the product development (required prototypes, expensive test equipment, etc.). The research work is based on the empirical analyses of processes in several automotive companies and information gathered from relevant literature. Starting with the analysis of the automotive product development and related success factors the specific requirements for automotive testing are investigated. In the empirical study several automotive companies within the world industrial triad (Europe, Japan, USA) are interviewed and analyzed by using a standardized questionnaire that is developed based on the theoretical studies and with help of the business unit for powertrain engineering of AVL. The identified success factors are discussed and future implications based on these success factors are outlined.
