Abstract
This study outlines the results of the life cycle assessment for all essential parts of the Electronics Based Systems Building (EBS) at Graz University of Technology. The results show that, due to the high operating energy demand in a research and laboratory
building, the operating energy demand is responsible for about 82% of the greenhouse gas emissions over a period of 50 years. Nevertheless, a scenario analysis of future electricity mixes shows that the relative share of emissions from operating energy decreases significantly. In contrast, the grey emissions in the
building are determined to be around 1 tCO2-eq/m2 NFA
and, according to the analysis of the scenarios, represent a substantial part of the emissions over the building's life cycle. If the results of the grey emissions of the EBS building are additionally put into the context of the overall GHG accounting of the Graz
University of Technology by assuming an annual new construction rate of 5.000 m2 NFA/a, the grey emissions
of new building construction are responsible for about 18% of the total annual GHG emissions of the Graz University of Technology. Due to the decarbonisation of the electricity sector, the grey GHG emissions of buildings are becoming relatively more important
