Abstract
According to the Technical Specification Interoperability “Safety in Railway Tunnels”, if a railway tunnel is longer than 20 km, an underground evacuation and rescue point (ERP) is required where travellers can be evacuated to a safe area and emergency services can find appropriate firefighting equipment. The ERP is particularly approached in case of a train fire and therefore must be of a high safety standard and equipped with advanced technologies. This paper focuses on innovative safety measures in the Koralm tunnel and on the emergency management. Especially for evacuating a passenger train at the ERP, it is demonstrating the complex interaction of safety facilities and its impact on the evacuation process.
