Abstract

Road Safety Audits and Road Safety Inspections are intended to identify weaknesses in the development phase and in the operation phase of roads and to prevent them by taking appropriate measures. In certain cases, the vehicle dynamics accident simulation can provide additional decision support in the assessment of road safety, but is not yet used usually. The objective of the study is to introduce the method of vehicle dynamic accident simulation of a planned design variant of a road section. This road section should be assessed with regard to road safety by means of vehicle dynamic parameters. The road section is designed with a transverse slope directed towards the outside of the bend which deviates from the defined parameters in the standard RVS 03.03.23 due to routing advantages. A following path and a lane change manoeuvre are simulated at different speeds and under different road conditions. The assessment criteria are the lateral acceleration, the slip angle and the rollover risk. There is no high lateral acceleration and increased risk of skidding within the following path manoeuvre. The slip angle is also below the limit value and there is no risk of a rollover. In the lane change manoeuvre during an emergency steering situation lateral accelerations are reached, which were reported as uncomfortable in volunteer driving tests. The slip angle, as a measure of the risk of skidding, is within the limit range. An increased risk of rollover was not observed. In any case, a road friction of μ less than or equal to 0.1 is critical for both driving manoeuvres, and the accident risk should be reduced by suitable measures (e.g. speed reduction). The vehicle dynamic accident simulation used in the study is a very good method to objectively assess road safety during Road Safety Audits and Road Safety Inspections. However, the results cannot be applied to other road sections and must be examined on a case-by-case basis
