Abstract

Lightning protection of high voltage substations provides a significant contribution to the reliable operation of our high voltage systems. Since substations represent the hubs of electrical distribution and transmission grids, direct lightning strikes can affect the stability of supply and the reliable operation of these systems. In this context, air-insulated high voltage outdoor substations are particularly exposed to the direct effects of lightning discharges since their active parts are located in exposed positions outdoors. Lightning protection of structures and living beings is defined in the standard ÖVE/ÖNORM EN 62305‑3. This standard provides various methods for the design of lightning protection and can be adapted for outdoor substations, whereas the standard ÖVE/ÖNORM EN 61936‑1 deals with the requirements for high voltage installations, such as minimum distances and minimum heights of active parts and the definition of a danger zone. Both standards are combined using the example of a 380 kV high voltage outdoor substation based on the practical design of external lightning protection measures.
