Car Occupant Detection Using Ultra-Wideband Radar

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference paper

Abstract

In this paper, we propose car occupancy detection using ultra-wideband (UWB) radar. A radio channel model is developed for the passenger cabin of
the car and a single occupant, based on a pinhole channel. A detector is derived to detect repetitive motion within this channel, such as the breathing motion of a
human. Measurements have been performed to confirm the structural assumptions about the channel and received signal whereas Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate an improved detection rate compared to a windowed energy
detector or FFT-detector under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions.
