Efficient Intake- and Exhaust Noise Optimisation based on Simulation Results

Abstract

Intake- and exhaust noise deteriorates or enhances the interior- and exterior noise character of vehicles.
To optimize the acoustic layout of exhaust- and intake systems 1D- simulation models are used followed by an experimental fine tuning. Basically these models are restricted in frequency range and by the complexity of mufflers and complete systems.
In a research program the 1D AVL BOOST simulation tool was refined, improved and verified to predict by simulation very accurately the acoustic performance of complex exhaust and intake systems up to 1.2 kHz. In this paper the modeling, the experimental verifications and practical applications will be reported.
