Abstract

The aim of this work is it to develop a phased array coil-arrangement and to compare it‘s signal to noise ratio in the given region of interest, with a head-neck coil. The specially developed coil-arrangment shall be suitable for the imaging of a human jaw in a magnetic resonance imaging scanner with 3 Tesla. The design of the coil, considering the given region of interest, thereby resulting in a coil arrangement with nine coils.
In this work some theoretical principles related to MR imaging , types of receiver coils and phased array coil arrangements are described and based on this the 9-channel phased array coil is realized.
After the construction of the coil , the adjustment by the network analyzer proved problematic due to problems with the active decoupling and the preamplifiers used.Due to these problems two amplifiers dropped out in the final evaluation and the resulting MR images were taken only with 7 out of 9 channels.
This resulted in a 12% lower SNR, compared to the 20-channel Head Neck coil. A thorough redesign, however, still provides sufficient potential for raising the SNR to the level of the commercial coil.
