Experimental investigations on single-sided CMT welding of hybrid aluminum-steel blanks

Single-sided Cold Metal Transfer welding of aluminum alloy EN AW 6014 T4 and zinc-coated dual phase steel
HCT450X + ZE75/75 was investigated. These materials are typically used for automotive lightweight application,
e.g. in multi-material car bodies. The microstructures of the weld seam and of the intermetallic layer between the
steel sheet and the weld seam were characterized by conventional optical light microscopy and by scanning
electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results of the experimental investigations
indicate that the intermetallic layer has tongue/tooth-like morphology of less than 20 μm thickness, which is
acceptable to meet the requirements regarding the mechanical properties. However, hot cracks which deteriorate
the formability of the metal blanks in subsequent processing steps may form during the welding process. In order
to reduce the hot cracking tendency different welding process parameters and filler materials were tested.
