Gazele - A Highly Scalable Radar Target Stimulator

Radar sensors are one of the key information sources for advances driving assistance systems (ADAS). The application of ADAS in the framework of autonomous driving imposes certain requirements on testing such systems. For example hardware in the loop tests for focusing on complex scenarios are necessary for comprehensive validation of these systems. To achieve this goals radar target stimulators which can provide large numbers of targets, cover the range close to the sensor and are independent of the radar waveform are required.

In the Gazele project an analogue system architecture has been developed and built, scalable both in the number of possible targets and covered range. Also provisions for further enhancements like interferer stimulation and range extensions with DRFM systems for large range coverage have been included.

At first the presentation will provide an introduction to the requirements and techniques for scenario based radar target stimulation. Thereafter the system design is discussed and measurement results from the first prototype are presented. An outlook to further developments and follow-up projects will conclude the talk.
