Abstract

The Vorarlberger Illwerke AG is currently working on redesigning the headrace system to the existing Rodundwerk I. The old power water way consists of an upper pressure tunnel, a penstock, a lower pressure tunnel along with the distribution pipeline to the four turbines and a pump. The same headwater sections are being constructed with an optimized route in the immediate vicinity of the existing structure. For the optimized layout of the new headrace, system options were isolated by means of 2D analyses. The variant for construction was investigated by means of a 3D analysis and the obtained results are the basis of the definition of the lining areas and thus the dimensioning of the individual types of lining. The present contribution deals with the geological boundary conditions, the findings from the old headrace, the assumptions and the resulting layout of the redesign. Finally, the basics of the lining concept and the design results are presented.
